OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) provides a detailed insight into ocular health, offering a deeper understanding compared to standard digital retinal photography. While traditional methods focus on surface examination, OCT scans provide intricate 3D images of internal eye structures, including the retina, the blood vessel, the optic nerve fibres and disc, the cornea and all of its layers. These cross-sectional views facilitate early detection of significant issues and helps us monitor various eye conditions, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and more. Similar to ultrasound, OCT employs light waves instead of sound waves to visualise all layers of eye structures even its blood vessels. By capturing over 1,000 images of the eye, from the retina to the optic nerve, OCT generates precise 3D representations, enhancing our ability to assess ocular structures.
The OCT 3D scan is quick, painless, and non-invasive, much like conventional retinal photography. This report helps improve glaucoma diagnosis and treatment by taking one comprehensive scan. It shows detail of structures like optic nerve head details, nerve fibre layers RNFL and GCC thickness, compared to a database of healthy people, and even looks at the blood vessels around the optic nerve. This kind of scan supports wellness by giving a detailed picture for better eye health.
