The key to successfully managing retinal disorders is a quick assessment of the problem and treatment. The usual treatment for retinal disorders is administering injections such as steroid implant (Ozurdex) and anti-VEGF (Eylea, Avastin, and Lucentis) into the vitreous cavity (intravitreal injections).
The purpose of this treatment is to prevent further damage to the photoreceptors and restore the anatomy of the retina. The surgeon will administer these injections under local anaesthetics and may use a laser, but this is unlikely due to the recent improvements in the treatment.
We offer different types of intravitreal injections, depending on the condition of the patient. The first step involved in your retinal treatment disorder is a consultation with our experienced consultants. During the consultation, the consultant will check your eyes to determine the most suitable course of treatment for you.
Most times, patients receive same-day treatment, but we always present several options to our patients for them to decide which is best for them. You may choose to get the treatment on the same day as your appointment or book another appointment to receive your treatment.
The number and frequency of injections needed depend on the patient's condition and the way the person responds to treatment. Before your treatment, you would have a special plan which our clinicians will monitor during your treatment and make adjustments when necessary.
After you receive your injection and the anaesthetic wears off, you may experience some discomfort, but paracetamol can help ease the pain. You may use lubricant eye drops to reduce the dryness of the eyes.
For the first 48 hours after receiving the injection, you may notice that your eyes will likely become photosensitive and red, but the symptoms will subside within 2 to 3 days. If these symptoms persist further, contact our medical team.
Some patients experience floaters after receiving the injections, but this also clears off after a few days. The risk of getting blind after receiving the injection is about 1 in 1000, which is similar to most other conditions relating to the retina. Before the treatment, our surgeons will discuss the benefits and risks of the treatment plan, then instruct you on how to take care of your eyes after the treatment properly.
The prices below are inclusive of the surgeon's fee, the injection, scan, and consequent aftercare appointments.
