Implantable Contact Lens Surgery

Known as ICL implants, this is an ideal option for patients with high prescriptions or patients who are not necessarily a good candidate for laser eye surgery. This is due to a thin cornea, an excessively high prescription or dry eyes. Our team will take you through a suitability evaluation to determine which option is best and safest for your eye condition. Please book an appointment with us at Optimal Vision to know more about options available to you.

More about Implantable Contact Lens Surgery

An ICL is made from Collamer, which is a biocompatible material. It is a combination of collagen and polymer which is innert. This means it does not cause any side effects or discomfort for patients.

These implantable lenses are surgically placed inside the eye. They are extremely thin and implanted in the front part of the eye through a small incision between the iris and the natural lens. Therefore they make minimal changes to the natural structure of the eye and they are removable. In rare case there are any major changes in the vision or any other issues, the ICLs can be removed or replaced easily.

Another name for this procedure is the Visian ICL Phakic Lens Implant.

One the advantages of ICL surgery is that the process is easily reversible, unlike all other eye surgery types. This means our surgeon can remove the lens implant and replace it should there be changes in your vision or a clinical concern. Alternatively, you can go for laser refinement if necessary. Another use is implantation of multifocal ICL lenses as people grow older and experience the inability to read.

How does an ICL work?

Our eyes are like cameras, when light penetrates through the cornea and lens, it focuses on the retina, our optic nerve then transmits the image or information to our brain, which will then interpret what you're seeing.

The most important part of our eyes focusing ability is the cornea which, together with the lens inside the eye, allows you to have clear vision at all distances. Poor vision is caused when the eyes are too short or too long and the focal point of light entering the eye does not hit the retina correctly. Short-sightedness happens when you have a long eyeball, which projects images that fall short of the retina. Long-sightedness occurs when you have a short eyeball, which projects images that fall long of the retina. Hence the name!

Those that have very good eyesight possess a natural lens that alters its shape to enable them to see objects that position in different distance to our eyes, but if your long or short-sightedness is significant, flexibility of your natural lens may not be able to fix your eyesight. The good news is that extra focusing power can be provided by the ICL implants which help the light to focus better without the use of glasses or contact lenses.

Who can get ICL surgery?

ICL surgery is an ideal option for patients with high prescriptions or patients who are not necessarily a good candidate for laser eye surgery. This is due to a thin cornea, an excessively high prescription or dry eyes. Our team will take you through a suitability evaluation to determine which option is best and safest for your eye condition. Please book an appointment with us at Optimal Vision to know more about options available to you.

As professionals in the field, we have surgeons who will do an extensive examination of your eyes and recommend the appropriate solution according to your eye condition. Always get eye care from experts who are highly experienced and trained, so you don't end up with a more severe issue than you had before.

What to expect during ICL surgery

Patients ready for ICLs are usually given a local anaesthetic to make the eyes numb throughout the procedure. You may also be sedated for added relaxation on the day of the operation.

A less than 3mm incision will be made on the cornea by your surgeon. The ICL which is initially folded will be inserted into your eye where it will gently unfold in the front part of the eye. Your surgeon will then proceed to place it in the right position between your iris (coloured part of your eye) and your natural lens.

Since it's introduction in the 1900s, these implants have seen constant improvement in design and safety. It might interest you to know that over a million ICLs have been implanted worldwide.

Post ICL surgery recovery

The majority of patients recover quickly as there are minimal incisions on the surface of the eyes however minor discomfort including watery and red eyes are expected for the first two days after surgery. Your vision will improve immediately however you may need patience for a few days to notice the best outcome. You should be able to resume work after a couple of days (job dependent). As said earlier the procedure is safe and pain-free and should not be a cause for concern.

Imagine waking up with no thick glasses or contact lens! No more daily hassles!
